Colorful kayaks on a wooden dock at Lake Norman in golden hour light, calm blue water reflecting pines and sunset glow

We are in the last stretch of August, and this is one of the best times of year around Lake Norman. The water is still warm enough for swimming. The evenings carry that first whisper of cooler air. Farmers markets are bursting with peak-season produce. And the calendar is full of bluegrass festivals, international cultural celebrations, live music, and community events that remind you why this region is such a special place to call home.

I am Tiffany Huntoon, a REALTOR and Production Partner on The Lauren Rocco Team at eXp Realty. I grew up in North Carolina, I served in both the Army and Air Force, and I spent years in corporate tech sales before coming home to help families find their own place in this beautiful region. Every week I guide buyers and sellers across Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Mooresville, Charlotte, Concord, and Kannapolis. I write these guides because the best decisions about where to live come from understanding what life actually feels like here.

New Restaurants to Try Right Now

The Lake Norman dining scene has never been stronger. According to the Charlotte Observer, at least 21 new restaurants have opened across the Lake Norman towns in the past year and a half. Here are the ones to put on your list.

Vitale Lakeside

Mooresville

Opened May 2026 at the former Queens Landing site (1459 River Highway). A family-friendly waterfront destination with a floating bar, 38 boat slips, and a rooftop stage. Over $3 million invested in transforming this landmark into a dining and entertainment hub. The views of the lake are spectacular, especially at sunset.

Harriet's Hamburgers

Davidson
Burgers

Opened July 3, 2026 in Davidson. Smashed-to-order burgers with a retro-inspired vibe. Locals are already calling it the best burger in town. The outdoor picnic tables make it a perfect post-farmers-market lunch spot on Saturdays.

Ilios Crafted Greek

Davidson
Greek

Opened July 20, 2026 on Griffith Street in Davidson. This is the fifth location for the popular Charlotte-area Greek restaurant chain. Fresh, authentic Greek cuisine including gyros, souvlaki, spanakopita, and their famous tzatziki. A welcome addition to Davidson's dining row.

Little Mama's Italian

Cornelius

Charlotte's beloved Italian-American spot has expanded to Lake Norman. House-made pastas, brick oven pizzas, and the same warm, welcoming atmosphere that made the original location a city favorite. A wonderful addition to the Cornelius dining scene.

Chili Willi's Tex Mex Grill

Still the most talked-about restaurant on the lake. Esquire named it one of the Best New Restaurants in America in 2025, and it continues to draw diners from across the Charlotte metro. Chef-driven seafood in an intimate setting. Reservations are essential.

The Guest House by Choplin's

Huntersville

A new steakhouse from the team behind Choplin's Restaurant, opening in a beautifully restored Victorian-style home on Gilead Road. The most anticipated fine-dining opening in the Lake Norman area this year. The setting alone is worth the visit.

Outdoor Adventures for Late Summer

The water is still warm, the evenings are still long, and the parks are at their most beautiful. Here is where to get outside right now across the region.

Lake Norman State Park

Troutman Swimming, hiking, kayaking

The swimming beach, kayak rentals, and 30+ miles of hiking and mountain biking trails are still in full swing. By late August, the crowds start to thin, making weekday visits especially peaceful. Arrive before 10 a.m. on weekends for the best parking.

Ramsey Creek Park

Cornelius Beach, kayaking, picnics

A beautiful lakeside park with a sandy swimming beach (lifeguarded through Labor Day), a hiking trail, a kayak launch, and plenty of green space. Less crowded than the state park on weekends and just as beautiful. My top pick for a late-summer afternoon with the family.

U.S. National Whitewater Center

Charlotte Adventure, live music

Whitewater rafting, kayaking, zip lines, mountain biking, and the free River Jam concert series on Thursday through Saturday evenings. August and early September are prime time. The Labor Day weekend celebration is always a highlight with trail races and live music.

Village Park

Kannapolis Families, splash pad, carousel

Still one of the most beautiful public parks in the region. The splash pad operates daily, the restored 1908 carousel and Rotary Express train delight kids of all ages, and the walking trails around the pond are perfect for an evening stroll. Summer concert and movie series keep the calendar full.

Latta Nature Preserve

Huntersville Hiking, wildlife, nature center

1,460 acres of natural beauty with 16+ miles of hiking trails, the Carolina Raptor Center, an aquarium, and lake access. The air-conditioned nature center makes it a perfect midday escape from the heat, and the raptor center is always a hit with kids.

Jetton Park

Cornelius Sunset, walking, fishing

A 66-acre lakefront park with walking trails, a fishing pier, a beach area, and picnic shelters. The sunset views from the pier are spectacular in late August. Free for Cornelius residents with a modest fee for visitors.

A personal note from Tiffany: If you have not been to Village Park in Kannapolis yet, go this weekend. The splash pad, the historic carousel, the Rotary Express train, and the walking trails around the pond make it one of the best family destinations in the entire Charlotte metro. And the summer concert series there has been drawing incredible acts. It is a park that keeps getting better every year, and it is a big reason why Kannapolis is one of the fastest-growing communities in the region.

Back to School: What Families Need to Know

With schools across Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Cabarrus County systems now back in session, here are a few things to keep on your radar if you have school-aged children.

The splash pads at Village Park in Kannapolis, Ramsey Creek Park in Cornelius, and other county parks are still operating through Labor Day weekend. That gives you one last long weekend of water fun before the full school routine settles in.

If you are new to the area and still navigating school options, see our in-depth guide to Lake Norman area schools and our breakdown of charter and private school enrollment. There are some important lottery deadlines and open enrollment windows that families relocating to the area need to know about.

What Is Happening in Concord and Kannapolis

The communities of Concord and Kannapolis continue to see incredible momentum. Downtown Concord is in the middle of a genuine revitalization, with new dining destinations like Mestiza Steakhouse (a Latin steakhouse bringing bold flavors to the historic district) and the Concord Trading Post anchoring the downtown scene. The Route 29 Pavilion is drawing bigger acts every season, and the Cabarrus County Fair returns September 11-19 with nine days of rides, fair food, livestock shows, and live music. The FoodieLand Food Festival at Charlotte Motor Speedway (September 18-20) is another major draw for food lovers across the region.

Kannapolis continues to shine with Village Park as its crown jewel. The park's amphitheater hosted an incredible summer concert series including Andy Grammer and The Four Tops, the splash pad and carousel are beloved by families, and the Dale Trail celebrates the town's NASCAR heritage. The Kannapolis Cannon Ballers season at Atrium Health Ballpark wraps up in early September, so catch a game while you still can. Downtown Kannapolis has seen 40-plus new businesses and restaurants open as part of its ongoing revitalization, making it one of the most exciting communities to watch in the Charlotte metro.

For families considering a move to Cabarrus County, home prices remain more accessible than many Lake Norman waterfront communities, and schools have seen significant investment. It is a story worth paying attention to. Take a Saturday to explore downtown Concord and Village Park in Kannapolis. You might just fall in love with the area.
